Accra, Ghana – Africa’s future depends on its ability to unite, innovate, and prioritize sustainability, according to Mr. John K. Essel, Pro-Chancellor and Founder of Knutsford University. Speaking at the university’s 18th Matriculation and 15th Congregation ceremony, Essel emphasized the need for African nations to recommit to these principles to secure the continent’s future.
Essel reiterated former President Kwame Nkrumah’s call for a “United Kingdoms of Africa”, a federation that respects cultural identities while promoting stronger political and economic cooperation. He stressed that effective integration requires harmonized standards, robust digital infrastructure, free movement of people, and coordinated industrial strategies.
The Pro-Chancellor urged Pan-African academic collaboration, innovation, and investment in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. He emphasized the importance of sustainable environmental and economic management, warning that Africa’s abundant resources risk becoming a curse without it.
Essel also highlighted the need for Africa to have a stronger voice in global governance, echoing President John Dramani Mahama’s call for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council with veto power.
In his address, Mr. Yaw Sakyi-Danso, a Senior officer from the Ministry of Education representing the President of the ofofGhana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, highlighted Knutsford University’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and Africa-centered development. He urged students to innovate, collaborate, and sustain excellence.
The university has made significant strides, including the introduction of 24 new academic programs and the integration of Per Tutor AI. The institution was also named Best Private Tertiary Education Institution of the Year 2025.
The ceremony witnessed the conferment of an Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) on Bishop Douglas Akuamoah Boateng, the Chancellor of the University.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony K. Ahiawodzi reported on the university’s progress, including partnerships with international institutions and challenges such as low student numbers and tuition arrears. He appealed for support to address these issues and expand the university’s infrastructure.
The event marked a significant milestone for Knutsford University, with the conferment of degrees on 286 graduands and the matriculation of 761 fresh students.
