Accra, Ghana – The impact of climate change on Ghana’s weather patterns has necessitated the upgrade of the Ghana Meteorological Agency into an Authority, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Meteorological Awareness Month, the Minister highlighted the increasing threat of climate change, citing extreme weather events, flooding risks, and changing rainfall patterns as major concerns. “The impact of climate change is real, and we need to take proactive measures to mitigate its effects,” he said.

The Minister noted that Ghana is experiencing more frequent and intense weather-related disasters, such as floods and droughts, which have devastating impacts on agriculture, infrastructure, and human lives. He emphasized that accurate and timely weather forecasts are critical in helping communities prepare and respond to these disasters.

The upgrade is expected to enhance the agency’s capabilities in providing climate information, early warning systems, and weather forecasts to support key sectors, including agriculture, aviation, and disaster management. This will enable farmers to make informed decisions about planting and harvesting, airlines to optimize flight routes, and disaster management teams to respond quickly to emergencies.

“Climate change is no longer a distant threat, it’s a reality that requires immediate attention,” Sam George emphasized. The agency’s enhanced role will support climate resilience efforts, informing decision-making and planning in vulnerable sectors.

The move is seen as a step towards enhancing Ghana’s climate resilience and improving disaster preparedness, ultimately contributing to sustainable development. The Minister urged Ghanaians to take climate change seriously and work together to mitigate its impacts.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency’s upgraded status is expected to improve its ability to provide critical weather services, supporting the country’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and reduce the risks associated with climate change.
