CSOs Key to Bridging Ghana’s Climate Change Knowledge Gap

Accra, Ghana – Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are playing a vital role in bridging the knowledge gap on climate change in Ghana. Climate change concepts, though gaining traction, remain complex and inaccessible to many communities. CSOs are stepping in to simplify these technicalities, making them understandable and actionable for local populations.

“Climate change isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a reality affecting farmers, fishermen, and communities daily,” said Robi Chacha Mosenda, Senior Communities Associate, Africa at Accountability Counsel and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, speaking at the Capacity Building on World Bank & AfDB Accountability Mechanisms organised by Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND).

Mosenda emphasized the importance of inclusive climate policies, “ESG ensures climate policies are inclusive, consultative, and just.” He also highlighted CSOs’ role in simplifying climate change concepts, “CSOs simplify complex climate change terms into languages communities understand.”

By translating climate jargon into local languages, CSOs empower communities to take ownership of climate action. CSOs are also facilitating dialogue between development partners and communities, ensuring projects are tailored to local needs. For instance, the Power Africa initiative aims to transition rural women from firewood to cleaner energy sources, but CSOs advocate for gradual, affordable changes.

The Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework can enhance climate action equity. By integrating ESG principles, Ghana can create climate solutions that benefit all citizens.

CSOs are bringing communities to the table, amplifying grassroots voices. By doing so, they’re driving climate action that’s people-centered and effective.
