Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Climate Center for Excellence (GCCE) has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in the country’s fight against climate change. The center’s launch is expected to position Ghana as a leader in climate action in Africa.
Speaking at the launch event, Chauncia Willis-Johnson, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management (I-DEM), emphasized the importance of inclusivity in climate action. “One of my goals, and the goals of our team, is to have more women be included in the conversation,” she said, noting that women and youth are critical stakeholders in climate action and must be empowered to drive change.
The GCCE features a state-of-the-art Knowledge Hub, an innovation lab, and the Sankofa library, providing a wealth of climate-related resources for students, researchers, and the public. The center will host programs like the Youth Climate Corps, inviting students from across Ghana to participate in climate change workshops and develop sustainable solutions.
“Things are changing, and they’re happening very fast. It’s changing rapidly. We cannot get behind this. We have to get in front of it,” Willis-Johnson said, urging Ghanaians to take action towards climate resilience. “I advise all Ghanaians to come to the center, stop by, but also to do one thing. Do one thing, to make a change for climate resilience, everyone can do something.”
The GCCE’s launch comes at a critical time, as Ghana faces the devastating impacts of climate disasters. With a global board featuring renowned climate expert Cedric Jelus, the center is poised to drive climate action and promote sustainable development in Ghana and across Africa.
As Willis-Johnson emphasized, “A nation can build resilience, not an organization.” The GCCE welcomes everyone to visit and join the movement towards climate resilience.
