Ghana Secures $40 Million UN-Backed Fund to Boost Sustainable Cooling Solutions

Ghana has secured a $40 million UN-backed fund to accelerate its transition to low-GWP refrigerants and scale energy-efficient cooling technologies. The Environmental Protection Authority and Energy Commission are leading the initiative, focusing on rapid transition, efficient AC deployment, and local assembly capacity building.

The funding supports Ghana’s commitment to the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment, aiming to phase down high-GWP HFCs. Local assembly incentives will reduce imports, create jobs, and strengthen supply resilience. This move positions Ghana as a leader in sustainable cooling, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The project involves technician upskilling, promotes local assembly, and enhances energy efficiency standards. Ghana’s National Cooling Plan and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Roadmap guide this transition, targeting 70% penetration of low-GWP refrigerants in air conditioners by 2030.

Ghana’s air conditioning demand is projected to grow by 30% by 2030, making sustainable cooling solutions crucial. The initiative is expected to reduce energy consumption, lower emissions, and promote economic growth.
