Geneva, Switzerland – The Ghanaian Mission in Switzerland has received Mr. Pascal-Jean Bernhard, Director of Waste-to-Energy, who presented innovative solutions for sustainable waste management and energy production. Mr. Bernhard was welcomed by the Ambassador of Ghana,  Prof. Mrs Esi Awuah (PhD, FGHiE, FAAS) to Switzerland, who received him at the Ghanaian Mission.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Mr. Bernhard to introduce the Swiss Way Waste-to-Energy concept, which uses pyrolysis technology to convert plastic waste into valuable energy products such as diesel, naphtha, and kerosene, without the need for incineration.

The system is designed to operate as part of a 24-hour circular economy model for solid waste management, converting organic waste into biogas or compost, and processing plastics and other materials into useful energy resources.

This approach offers a cleaner alternative to traditional waste disposal methods, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution. Notably, the system is self-sustaining, operating without reliance on the national electricity grid, and includes technology to harvest water from the atmosphere to support operations.

The discussion also covered waste mining from existing refuse dumpsites, recovering valuable materials and energy resources while reclaiming polluted land. This approach can help address Ghana’s significant waste management challenges, including the lack of adequate landfill space and the environmental impacts of open dumping.

Mr. Bernhard indicated that investors are ready to support the initiative, pending a detailed presentation to develop a comprehensive business plan.

The Ghanaian Mission sees this as an exciting opportunity to bring Swiss technologies to Ghana, creating jobs, improving environmental management, and advancing sustainable development. The Ambassador expressed optimism about the potential partnership, highlighting the benefits of innovative waste management solutions for Ghana’s environment and economy.
