GMet Commissions Automatic Weather Station at Achimota School

News Desk Report

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), with support from Veriground Weather Networks, has officially installed an Automatic Weather Station at Achimota School in Accra. This event is part of the celebrations for this year’s National Meteorological Awareness Month (MAM).

The ceremony took place on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and also included the launch of the Achimota School Climate Club, aimed at inspiring students’ interest in weather, climate science, and environmental sustainability.

The new Automatic Weather Station will enable real-time collection of weather data such as maximum and minimum temperatures, relative humidity, wind speed, and wind direction. Additionally, four thermometers within a Stevenson Screen were installed to facilitate weather observation and educational activities within the school.

During the event, Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, Deputy Director-General of GMet, highlighted the need to expand Ghana’s weather observation network to enhance forecasting accuracy and climate services.

“Ghana requires more observation stations to improve our weather prediction capabilities. Through the Adopt-A-Weather Station Initiative, we invite organizations and schools like Achimota to collaborate with us in installing and maintaining these stations,” he said.

“Schools are ideal locations because they are hubs of learning that foster curiosity. Monitoring weather today helps us gather essential knowledge to protect lives and property in the future.”

Mr. John Sanders, Country Representative of Veriground Weather Networks, stated that the partnership with GMet aims to give students hands-on experience with weather monitoring and climate data.

“Our objective is to establish weather stations in key schools, allowing students to interact with them, understand the data being generated, and learn how weather information can be applied in their studies and daily lives for the benefit of the nation,” he explained.

The weather station was officially commissioned by Mrs. Vivian Abla Kally, Deputy Director-General for General Services at GMet.

In closing, Mr. Kwabena Boateng, Assistant Headmaster for Administration at Achimota School, thanked GMet and Veriground Weather Networks for selecting the school for this initiative. “We are grateful for this opportunity,” he said. “We will ensure the weather station is properly used for learning and observation.”

This installation supports GMet and its partners’ ongoing efforts to expand Ghana’s weather observation network and promote climate awareness and education among young people.
