Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya has officially launched the Enhancing Community Resilience and Water Security in the Upper Athi River Catchment Area (ARCA) project, a major initiative aimed at strengthening climate resilience and water security in Kiambu, Machakos, Nairobi, and Nyandarua counties.
The project, launched by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, will support millions of Kenyans, including farmers, pastoralists, industries, and urban households, by improving sustainable water management and building resilience against climate shocks.
The programme, funded by the Green Climate Fund and implemented by the National Environment Management Authority in collaboration with the Water Resources Authority and the Kenya Meteorological Department, focuses on three key areas: climate-resilient water infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, and enhanced climate information systems.
“Kenya is committed to addressing the impacts of climate change, and this project is a significant step towards achieving our climate goals,” said Environment CS Deborah Barasa. “The ARCA project will provide a lifeline for vulnerable communities and support our efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable future.”
The project aligns with Kenya’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of millions of Kenyans.
“We are proud to partner with the Green Climate Fund and other stakeholders to implement this critical project,” said PS Festus K. Ng’eno. “The ARCA project will not only improve water security but also contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.”
