Kenya has officially launched the Kenya National Carbon Registry, a centralized digital platform managed by the Ministry of Environment and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The registry aims to track carbon credit projects, verify emissions reductions, and prevent double-counting, thereby enhancing transparency and credibility in the country’s carbon market.
The registenablell allow companies and investors to participate in verified carbon prenhancingmproving their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) credentialmitigatingreducing reputational risk. It will also open access to international funding and support renewable energy and conservation projects through monetized carbon reductions.
Designed with local communities in mind, the initiative integrates participation and benefit-sharing, linking environmental action to social impact. The registry is expected to attract climate finance, support community livelihoods, and position Kenya as a regional leader in climate governance and carbon market integrity.
“Kenya is ready to embrace ESG,” said Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa. “The registry establishes the infrastructure necessary to ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity in carbon trading”.
