News Desk Report
Oceana, the world’s largest international ocean conservation advocacy organisation, has launched its first-ever office in Africa, with Sonia Kwami at the helm. Based in Accra, Kwami will lead campaigns aimed at rebuilding Ghana’s fisheries, strengthening food and nutrition security, and protecting the livelihoods of coastal communities.
Ghana’s ocean resources are crucial to the livelihoods of over 21 million people, but fish populations have declined by nearly 80% over the last 20 years due to overfishing, illegal fishing, and destructive practices. Kwami, with her 22 years of experience in high-impact campaigns across Africa and globally, is well-positioned to drive change.
Her work will focus on partnering with local communities to strengthen fisheries management, promote sustainable fishing practices, and protect the livelihoods of fishers, fish processors, and coastal families. “Placing an African leader, rooted in African communities, at the helm of this work is exactly the kind of shift global conservation needs,” the article notes.
Kwami’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Oceana’s efforts to protect the world’s oceans and promote sustainable fishing practices.
