Textile Recycling International Pushes for More Sustainable Fashion Practices

Textile Recycling International, a UK-based organization with over 35 years of experience in Ghana, has emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

During an interview with Climate Watch at the GreenSeam Upcycled Fashion Show, Peter Page, Group Recycling & ESG Director, emphasized the importance of keeping clothing in circulation for longer periods to reduce environmental impacts and help mitigate climate change.

He stressed the importance of keeping clothing in circulation longer to reduce environmental impacts and mitigate climate change.

According to him, sustaining the circulation of clothing is essential for everyone, whether through reuse or upcycling.

Page pointed out that maintaining clothing circulation is the most significant action we can take to address climate change related to garment wear.

The Green Seam Upcycled Fashion Show, held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, in Accra and supported by Textile Recycling International, showcased stunning eco-friendly creations made from second-hand clothing, promoting both sustainability and style.

“First and foremost, the goal of any climate change initiative or enthusiast is to keep clothing in circulation longer,” he stated.

Page reiterated, “We need to stop buying as much. We must be careful about what we purchase. Look for reputable designers, brands, and retailers; check the garments, and understand what goes into their creation and how easily they can be recycled.”

He added that “the sustainable journey for clothing needs to be adapted, and the design of clothing must change so that it lasts longer, remains in use longer, and can be recycled more easily.”

Regarding sustainable clothing circulation, he encouraged designs that promote longevity, reuse, upcycling, and recyclability.

Page emphasized the importance of consumer awareness and behavior, believing this can influence people to buy less and choose sustainable brands.

He also highlighted the need for industry shifts, particularly moving away from ultra-fast fashion.

After 35 years in the textile recycling industry, Peter Page expressed his organization’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices and the significance of keeping clothing in circulation.

He also noted that his organization exports quality second-hand clothing to markets such as Katamanto in Ghana.

“I am currently working on sustainability initiatives focused on ethical and sustainable recycling practices,” he disclosed.

Page highlighted the broader implications of sustainable fashion, stating it can reduce environmental impact by minimizing waste and lowering the ecological footprint.

He reiterated the need to continue engaging younger generations by promoting the adoption of sustainable fashion practices.

He praised Mrs. Mary and MLC Fashion for hosting the Green Seam Upcycled Fashion Show, urging her to continue inspiring and influencing young fashion designers through the use of waste textiles.

The Green Seam Upcycled Fashion Show showcased clothing designs made from second-hand items.

These garments were transformed into beautiful, eco-friendly creations that promote sustainability and style, all crafted from textile waste.
