UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Calls for Urgent Climate Action at COP30

Belém, Brazil – Simon Stiell, the United Nations Climate Change Executive Secretary, emphasized the pressing need for accelerated climate action during his keynote address at the COP30 Leaders’ Summit. While he acknowledged the progress made since the Paris Agreement, he cautioned that it is insufficient.

Stiell stated that the world is currently not on track to meet the 1.5°C target, as global temperatures reach record highs and extreme weather events continue to disrupt lives around the globe. He urged countries to enhance their climate plans and increase financing, highlighting the necessity of international cooperation and robust strategies.

“Without the Paris Agreement, we would be facing a potential 5°C rise,” Stiell remarked. “Currently, we are at less than 3°C, but our efforts are still too slow. We must transform plans into rapid action.”

Key Developments at COP30:

-Tropical Forests Forever Facility: Brazil has launched a new initiative aimed at raising $125 billion for the protection of tropical forests.

-Baku to Belém Roadmap: A strategy to scale climate finance to $1.3 trillion annually, focusing on grants and increasing access to private capital.

-Local Climate Action: Mayors and governors convened in Rio to amplify global climate efforts, announcing a commitment of $168 million to bolster local climate leadership.

– Global Stocktake: Countries are nearing completion of a comprehensive assessment of their progress under the Paris Agreement, identifying gaps and opportunities for accelerated action.

Stiell highlighted that finance is the “great accelerator” in the fight against climate change, calling for scaled-up financing that reaches all nations quickly, fairly, and fully. He urged developed countries to meet their climate finance commitments and support vulnerable nations in adapting to climate impacts.

The COP30 summit aims to enhance climate cooperation and accelerate action to address the climate crisis, with leaders from over 150 countries participating in the event.
