Climate Change: NCCC Calls for Integration of Climate Risk into Planning

Abuja, Nigeria – The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, has called on Nigerian government agencies to incorporate climate risk information into their planning and budgeting decisions.

Speaking at the 2026 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction presentation, Majekodunmi emphasized that recent Conference of the Parties (COP) results in Brazil have raised the bar for climate action, and Nigeria must prepare for a new era of mitigation, adaptation, and climate finance.

“The Conference marked a major move toward Paris Agreement implementation, raising ambition and delivery expectations,” Majekodunmi said. “This means Nigeria must prepare for a new era of mitigation, adaptation, climate finance, technological collaboration, capacity building, and innovation based on credible climate research and data.”

Majekodunmi urged all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and State Governments to incorporate the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) into their planning, budgeting, and investment decisions to ensure climate risk information influences policies, programs, and development outcomes.

The NCCC, in collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and other stakeholders, is working to transform climate information into policies, investments, and on-the-ground activities, especially at state and local government levels, where climate impacts are most felt.

“We remain committed to advancing climate-informed development for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Nigeria,” Majekodunmi said.

The 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction provides critical information for climate-sensitive sectors, including agriculture, aviation, water resources, and health. The NCCC and NiMet are working to ensure that this information is used to support climate resilience and sustainable development in Nigeria.
