Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) is teaming up with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to educate citizens on climate change and weather-related issues. The partnership was announced during a courtesy call by GMet officials on the NCCE, marking Meteorological Awareness Month (MAM).

GMet’s Director-General, Dr. Eric Asuman, emphasized the need for increased public awareness on climate change and weather conditions. “As part of our mandate to provide weather and climate services, we recognize the importance of public awareness in reducing the risks associated with extreme weather events,” he said.

Dr. Asuman appealed to the NCCE to leverage its presence across all regions to help sensitize citizens and communities on the implications of changing weather patterns and climate variability.

NCCE’s Deputy Chairman, Mr. Victor K. Brobbey, welcomed the partnership, citing climate change and environmental governance as key areas of focus for the Commission.

“The NCCE has consistently supported civic education initiatives on climate change and environmental governance, and this engagement with GMet presents a natural opportunity to deepen our efforts aimed at improving environmental responsibility among citizens,” he noted.

The collaboration aims to sensitize communities, especially those in flood-prone areas, on weather advisories and warnings. Dr. Asuman urged communities to take weather advisories and warnings about heavy rainfall seriously, highlighting the importance of public awareness in saving lives and property.

Mr. Brobbey assured GMet of NCCE’s commitment to supporting the initiative, stating that “climate change affects everyone, and we must work together to address its impacts.”

The partnership is expected to involve joint public education campaigns, workshops, and community outreach programs aimed at promoting climate awareness and resilience in Ghana. By working together, GMet and NCCE aim to reduce the risks associated with extreme weather events and promote sustainable development in Ghana.
