IPCC Expert Meeting Kicks Off in Accra to Tackle Climate Adaptation Challenges

News Desk Report

Accra, Ghana – The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has launched a three-day Expert Meeting on Adaptation Metrics, Methodologies and Indicators at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The meeting, hosted by the IPCC Working Group II, brings together nearly 60 experts from around the world to discuss approaches, methodologies, and indicators for assessing climate impacts and adaptation progress.

Ghana is seeking to strengthen its case for increased climate financing as it hosts this major international meeting. Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), emphasized that building local scientific capacity is critical to strengthening Africa’s negotiating position under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“Climate change is already affecting our people. We must understand it properly if we want to respond effectively,” she said. The meeting aims to stimulate discussions, assess existing frameworks, and contribute to the revision of IPCC Technical Guidelines.

Hon. Seido Issifu, Minister of Climate Change and Sustainability, called for clearer and more robust methods to measure countries’ adaptation efforts.

Dr. Bart van den Hurk, Co-Chair of the IPCC Working Group II, emphasized the need to understand how impacts differ across regions, communities, and sectors to support better decision-making.

The outcomes of the Accra meeting are expected to help countries better document climate damage, strengthen adaptation planning, and present clearer evidence when seeking international climate support.
