Nigeria, UNEP Cool Coalition Deepen Collaboration on Sustainable Cooling at Bonn Climate Talks

Bonn, Germany – Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) has strengthened efforts to advance sustainable cooling solutions through renewed engagement with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Cool Coalition during the ongoing 64th Sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) in Bonn, Germany.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the climate negotiations, brought together NCCC representatives and UNEP Cool Coalition officials led by Lily Riahi to explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration in support of Nigeria’s commitments under the Global Cooling Pledge (GCP).

Discussions centered on key areas critical to expanding access to sustainable cooling, including energy efficiency, local manufacturing, demand-side flexibility, stakeholder engagement, and the development of policies that promote climate-resilient cooling solutions across multiple sectors.

Both parties emphasized the need for coordinated and inclusive action to accelerate the deployment of sustainable cooling technologies. They noted that improving cooling systems is essential not only for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also for enhancing energy access, boosting efficiency, and supporting economic development.

The engagement comes as countries continue negotiations at SB64, a key preparatory meeting ahead of the next United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP31. The Bonn talks are focused on advancing technical discussions and strengthening international cooperation to support global climate action.

Participants highlighted the growing importance of sustainable cooling in addressing rising temperatures and increasing demand for cooling services, particularly in developing countries vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The NCCC reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing its climate pledges and underscored the role of strategic partnerships in delivering affordable, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable cooling solutions for citizens.

Officials said continued collaboration between Nigeria and the UNEP Cool Coalition would help accelerate progress toward the country’s climate and development goals while supporting broader global efforts to tackle climate change.
