News Desk Report

Abuja, Nigeria – In a landmark move, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), has issued the country’s first Letter of Authorisation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, enabling the issuance of 5.2 million carbon credits from clean cooking projects.

This milestone achievement marks a significant step in Nigeria’s climate action journey, strengthening the country’s carbon market and driving sustainable development. The clean cooking projects are expected to expand access to clean energy, reduce emissions, and support local manufacturing.

“The issuance of these carbon credits is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to climate leadership and sustainable growth,” said officials from the NCCC. The initiative aligns with the Nigeria Carbon Market Activation Policy (NCMAP), positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s climate agenda.

This development is expected to attract investments, mobilize resources for climate projects, and foster innovation in the clean energy sector. Nigeria’s bold step is set to pave the way for future climate projects, driving the country towards a low-carbon economy.

The success of this initiative underscores Nigeria’s dedication to achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and promoting sustainable development.
