Accra, Ghana – The Landfills2Landmarks 2026 Summit is set to bring together global leaders, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to address the pressing issue of textile waste management. Scheduled to take place from May 18-22, 2026, at Labadi Beach Hotel, the summit aims to promote sustainable textile practices and reduce waste.
The event follows a successful pre-summit webinar, which drew participants from 20 countries and highlighted the need for clearer textile classification, stronger visibility, improved sorting, cross-border accountability, and financing for end-of-use material.
Ghana, being a major recipient of second-hand clothing, is grappling with the challenges of managing textile waste. The country’s Environmental Protection Authority has confirmed that textile Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) work is underway, focusing on legal scope, levy design, and compliance mechanisms.
The summit will feature keynote speakers, including representatives from the Environmental Protection Authority, UNEP, and the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry. Participants will engage in discussions on regulating the imported used clothing economy, cross-border responsibility, and funding end-of-life outcomes.
The global fashion industry generates approximately 92 million tons of textile waste annually, with only 1% being recycled into new garments. The summit aims to explore solutions to this crisis and promote sustainable practices.
