Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Climate Action at UNFCCC SB64 in Bonn

Bonn, Germany— Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to climate action, sustainable development, and stronger international cooperation as global climate negotiations continue at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body 64 (SB64) sessions in Bonn, Germany.

The commitment was underscored during a bilateral meeting between the **Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. (Mrs.) Tenioye Majekodunmi**, and the **Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Simon Stiell**, on the margins of the ongoing negotiations.

The meeting provided a platform to discuss Nigeria’s climate priorities, progress in implementing its **Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0**, and efforts to translate climate commitments into tangible development outcomes.

Focus on Climate Finance and Implementation

Discussions centered on strengthening international cooperation, accelerating access to climate finance, and enhancing adaptation support for vulnerable communities.

Both sides emphasized the need to move beyond climate pledges toward implementation pathways that deliver measurable economic growth, resilience building, and sustainable development outcomes.

The Nigerian delegation stressed that access to predictable and adequate climate finance remains critical to achieving national climate goals and effectively implementing its updated NDC.

Nigeria’s Climate Priorities

Dr. Majekodunmi reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to full implementation of its NDC 3.0, noting that the country is actively working with international partners to unlock investments, technical assistance, and institutional support required for climate action.

She emphasized that Nigeria’s climate strategy is closely aligned with its broader development agenda, particularly in energy transition, climate resilience, and sustainable economic growth.

Commitment to Multilateral Cooperation

Nigeria reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement within the global climate process, stressing the importance of country-driven solutions that reflect national circumstances while contributing to global ambition.

Officials noted that Nigeria will continue working with multilateral institutions and development partners to advance practical solutions that address both climate challenges and development priorities.

The country also highlighted the importance of aligning international climate action with domestic development goals to ensure inclusive growth and long-term sustainability.

As SB64 continues in Bonn, Nigeria is expected to remain actively engaged in discussions on adaptation, climate finance, and implementation frameworks aimed at strengthening global climate governance and accelerating progress toward the goals of the Paris Agreement.
