Sammi Awuku Pushes Climate-Smart Farming, Environmental Law Enforcement

Mampong-Akuapem, Eastern Region — Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Hon. Sammi Awuku, has called for increased investment in climate-smart agriculture, stronger enforcement of environmental laws, and more inclusive climate policies as Ghana intensifies efforts to respond to the impacts of climate change.

He made the call during the outdooring of a Greenhouse Farm Project at the Mampong-Akuapem Senior Technical High School for the Deaf, an initiative implemented by the Africa Climate Collaborative at the University of Ghana with support from the Mastercard Foundation.

The project forms part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026, under the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future,” and is aimed at equipping students with practical skills in sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, and environmental stewardship.

Inclusive Climate Action

Mr. Awuku stressed that climate interventions must be inclusive, particularly for children and persons with special needs, noting that no group should be left behind in climate education and action.

 “The very thinking of establishing this in a special needs school sends a very strong message that no child should be left behind and nobody should be left behind in the climate conversation,” he said.

He emphasized that inclusive climate action is critical to building resilient communities and ensuring equitable access to opportunities within the green economy.

Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture

The MP highlighted his Offia Market Initiative, which connects farmers directly to consumers while encouraging the adoption of climate-friendly agricultural practices.

He explained that the initiative supports farmers in improving productivity, enhancing food quality, and building resilience against climate-related shocks.

Mr. Awuku added that collaboration with development partners such as the Mastercard Foundation and the Africa Climate Collaborative would help scale climate-smart agriculture interventions across farming communities.

Climate Change Already a Present Reality

He warned that climate change is no longer a distant or theoretical issue, citing shifting rainfall patterns and rising temperatures being experienced across the country.

 “We are experiencing it, we are feeling it. It is no longer abstract but an urgent and immediate reality,” he said.

Strengthening Environmental Governance

The MP also called for stronger enforcement of environmental regulations, particularly against illegal construction in waterways and other practices that contribute to environmental degradation.

He stressed the need for closer collaboration between Parliament, development partners, and local communities to strengthen environmental governance and ensure compliance with environmental laws.

Greenhouse as Training Hub

The greenhouse project is expected to serve as a practical training centre for students, promoting hands-on learning in climate-smart agriculture while raising environmental awareness among young people.

Stakeholders say the initiative will contribute to youth empowerment, food security, and climate resilience as Ghana works toward sustainable development goals.
