Ghana Faces Climate Crisis as Global Warming Accelerates

Ghana is already feeling the impacts of climate change, with erratic rainfall patterns affecting agriculture and rising sea levels threatening coastal communities. The country’s agricultural sector, which employs over 40% of the workforce, is particularly vulnerable to climate-related shocks. This is driving up food prices and exacerbating the cost of living crisis, with households struggling to afford basic necessities like rice, maize, and vegetables.

The World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) warning of a “climate imbalance” is a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate action in Ghana and globally. The agency’s deputy executive secretary, Ko Barrett, emphasized that the planet’s climate is “more out of balance than at any time in observed history”.

The WMO has sounded the alarm on the state of the planet’s climate, warning that greenhouse gas concentrations have reached an all-time high, driving heat records on land and sea. Between 2015 and 2025, the world experienced the hottest 11 years on record, with last year’s global mean temperature anomaly reaching 1.43°C above the 1850-1900 baseline.

The impacts of climate change are far-reaching, with rising food prices, increased healthcare costs, and damage to infrastructure. In Ghana, the cost of living is becoming unsustainable for many, particularly those in low-income households. The government’s commitment to climate resilience and sustainable development is crucial in this fight, but more needs to be done to support vulnerable communities and promote climate-smart agriculture.

The WMO stresses that the findings are a call to action, highlighting the need for urgent measures to mitigate the devastating impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities. As Ghana navigates this climate crisis, it’s clear that climate action can’t wait – the country’s future depends on it.
