São Tomé and Príncipe — Efforts to improve plastic waste management in São Tomé and Príncipe are gaining momentum as the IslandPlas Project works to strengthen plastic collection and recycling systems across the country.
The initiative, led by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in partnership with Green Advocacy Ghana (GreenAd) is being implemented with local partner Sucata Papagaio to create more sustainable solutions for plastic waste.
The project aims to give discarded plastics a new purpose by improving collection systems, reducing environmental pollution, and supporting the development of a more organised recycling sector.
In recent weeks, the Sucata Papagaio team has been engaging in field preparations to lay the foundation for the project’s activities, including efforts to enhance local capacity for collecting and processing plastic waste.
Through collaboration with communities and stakeholders, the IslandPlas Project seeks to promote cleaner environments while contributing to a circular economy approach in São Tomé and Príncipe.
The partners say the initiative represents a step towards transforming plastic waste challenges into opportunities for environmental protection and sustainable development.
