Power Shift Africa Convenes Experts on Energy Development and Just Transition in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya — Power Shift Africa has convened a three-day meeting of African energy and just transition experts in Nairobi to examine the continent’s energy future amid rising climate pressures and shifting global energy dynamics.

The convening brings together policymakers, researchers, civil society actors, and industry stakeholders to address persistent energy poverty and chart pathways for an equitable transition. Discussions are expected to focus on how Africa can move beyond expanding basic energy access to building resilient, low-carbon economies anchored in green industrialisation.

With more than 600 million people across Africa lacking access to electricity, participants are exploring strategies to accelerate deployment of renewable energy while ensuring inclusive growth. The continent is also endowed with significant renewable resources and critical minerals essential to the global energy transition—presenting both an opportunity and a strategic imperative for value addition.

Key sessions will examine policy frameworks, investment priorities, and governance models needed to support local industries, strengthen value chains, and promote public-interest approaches within the energy sector.

Central to the discussions is how African countries can harness their resource potential to drive socio-economic transformation, reduce energy poverty, and position themselves competitively in a rapidly evolving global energy landscape.

The outcomes of the meeting are expected to inform ongoing debates on sustainable energy development and contribute to shaping actionable strategies for a just and inclusive transition across the continent.
