German Embassy Visits E-Waste Management Centres to Strengthen Local Partnerships

News Desk Report

Accra, Ghana – The German Embassy in Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s e-waste management efforts. Mrs. Johanna Klotz, Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy, visited several e-waste project sites, including the National E-Waste Handover Centre (HOC) and two recycling companies in Agbogbloshie. The visit aimed to strengthen partnerships between the German Development Cooperation and local partners in the e-waste sector.

At the HOC, representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), the Environmental Protection Authority, and the E-Waste Fund highlighted progress in e-waste collection and dismantling capacities nationwide. The centre has been working to improve e-waste management practices, including the safe disposal of hazardous waste and the recycling of valuable materials.

Mrs. Klotz commended the partners for developing innovative solutions, such as transforming thermoplastics into furniture and producing tiles. These initiatives not only help to reduce waste but also create new economic opportunities for local communities.

The visit reaffirmed the German Development Cooperation’s commitment to advancing climate action and supporting Ghana’s circular economy through strong local partnerships. The E-Waste project is an initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in partnership with MEST and the Environmental Protection Authority of Ghana.

Ghana faces significant challenges in managing e-waste, including inadequate infrastructure and limited awareness of proper disposal practices. However, with international partnerships like the one with Germany, the country can access expertise, technology, and funding to improve its e-waste management systems.

The partnership aims to support Ghana’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and mitigate the environmental impacts of e-waste. By working together, Ghana can develop a more circular economy, reduce waste, and promote economic growth while protecting the environment.
